I qualify for the upgrade but I didn't know about it until recently so now I don't qualify. What a drag -_-;; Thanks for the informative article though. It really saved me alot of time and effort over nothing. Just wish I had known about it sooner.

Join the club. I was waiting for Win 7 to replace my 10 year old laptop, but when a local retailer advertised a nice Toshiba with the free upgrade I caved, I purchased it in August and I even asked the sales clerk if he was sure it was eligible for the upgrade and he said of course it is! Then after I try to get the upgrade, and can't,Toshiiba tells me there is a 'known issue' and they're working on it. after a few weeks, I write them again, and get the same response. Then, after two months they tell me "Oh, you have the 'basic' version of Vista. you're not eligible for upgrade." Well thanks for delaying long enough to prevent me from returning the damn thing! I won't spend another cent on Toshiba crap or even Microsoft, ever again. Apple, here I come!

I bought this toshiba in sept 2009 and I'm still waiting for Best Buy to honor their promise of a "free" upgrade. They tried to charge me $40.00 bucks and I balked. Now they just defer me to Microsoft and wash their hands of me ! I've filed a complaint with the Mass. Attornery General's Office for Consumer Affairs but don't expect much. I am stuck with this Vista puke all over my computer and a foul taste for Best Buy.

Lenovo's "free" upgrade to Windows 7 is a farce.
We ordered our upgrade shortly after purchasing a new Lenovo laptop with Vista preinstalled. So of course when it arrived, it was the 32-bit version upgrade of Windows 7, but the laptop is running the 64-bit version. Two months later, after numerous calls and e-mails, we still don't have the upgrade disk.
Our most recent calls have proven that the contact number has been disconnected! Twice when calling the 800 number, the support person hung up on us as soon as she determined that we were calling about a 64-bit need.
Decent laptop, abysmal customer support, nefarious (fraudulent) business practices.
If I had it to do over, I'd avoid Lenovo and go with HP's laptop.

I ordered a VGC RT 100 Y desktop from Sony Style in August. The Sony Salesman assured me a free Windows 7 upgrade was included. The Sony Salesman lied. When Oct 22 arrived, the Sony website says the first step for my free upgrade is to go somewhere and purchase Windows 7. I tried to get help from Sony Customer Care, but they just ignored me.

I agree with some of the previous comments that it is so unfare to have put a date on this offerand that we should all get the free upgrade

I am however, running Windows 7 RC on a seperate partition I created so I have a dual doot system. Vista premium/ Windows 7 RC. I am wondering if there is a discount program for those of us who were a part of the Release Candidate testing?
I don't mind Vista at all but, I am in abosolute LOVE with Windows 7. It's amazing!

I was so excited (I bought my Acer laptop on July 18th), and then crushed when I realized that my laptop has Vista Home Basic - like that's my fault! This is ridiculous that MS sold a product for which there is no Windows 7 equivalent! I remember Intuit used to play games like that with Quicken, which just forced me to stop using their products. I guess Linux is in my future...
                                                                                      But great article, thank you!

I just contacted dell support and they will send me the upgrade package, so thanks again

If you don't like vista I going to guess you are not going to like 7 much better. Ive been doing the beta testing for it and it is not much different and the tool bar keeps crashing.

                                                                                                • Avatar

Everybody stuck with any Vista program should be entitled to a free upgrade. The people who purchased a computer when Vista first came out suffered the most. Why onlly those from June 26, 2009?
