The correct space saver fits the front..find one from a U31 Nissan Presage as the Leaf running gear is based on that.

I got space saver spares for 2 Leafs (2012) and from memory there was less clearance on the front than on the rear. So the space saver was ok on the rear. With a front tyre puncture my plan was to put the space saver on the rear and put the rear wheel on the front. Probably best not to put a space saver on the front in any case.

That was well worth the time. Bolt pattern fits, but not enough clearance for the brake pad holder. I have a paperweight to dispose of.

Yesterday I posted a photo of my battery upgrade to 62 kw. There was a number of comments and interest in what I had done.
I thought I would explain a little more here.
(Admin- if this is not acceptable please remove)
1, is it worth upgrading the battery to new?
I believe it is worth the investment if the car is in good condition. I like my leaf and intend to keep it long term so worth it for me.
2, what size battery to get?
Unless you really need a range of + 400kms, I suggest a 40kw or 50kw as a more cost efficient option.
3, is it hard to do your own upgrade?
It is not for the faint hearted, but if you have mechanical experience and understand the dangers of high voltage DC, it is a rewarding project. I am sure many leaf owners are capable 😀
I used Helen Mao At Vivne for my battery kit. It is a good kit, but it did take a the equivalent of a couple of days to complete to whole process.
There is also the issue of what to do with your old cells. This will depend on the state of them, but reasonable one are good for home off grid projects so potential sale.
If you were to do this yourself, it would cost between $10k and $14k depending on the battery capacity & exchange rate.
Importing the battery does have costs. GST and clearance costs being the largest. I also suggest getting an adapter to connect OBD dongle so you can check the batteries before sealing up the case.
And of course, you need leaf spy pro in your toolbox for checking & resetting errors and to pair the battery with your car.

LVV certification engineers will likely certify the 62kwh swap. But its just another $1,200 or so and weeks of dealing with someone who only cares about v8 hotrods and doesn't want to think about a Nissan Leaf.

I've been tracking the soh and hx of our 30kwh Leaf, it has dropped about 5% in both soh and hx in a year, and hx is now 28 which is obviously not good. It has gone in turtle mode on Transmission Gully. We live on a hill and have taken it for a spin while tracking Leafspy. See attached. Just wondering if there are any weak cells, or if just the whole pack is bad?

Bear in mind that LeafSpy doesn't update all cells at once, so that first capture is showing something that doesn't exist. The pack is definitely tired overall with what appear to be a few cells that are worse than the others, but not enough to expect anything worthwhile from replacing them.
That car likely still has a pretty decent amount of life left providing it doesn't have to climb any long hills, so one option would be to sell it under those recommendations and recover what you can, value-wise.
The other option would be find a replacement pack and someone to swap it.
Or a new pack from somewhere like ECVS.

I see a few posts in here from time to time but usually little details what is actually legal.
So, directly from NZTAs Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual, Table 13-5-1, Fitting of, or modification to, high voltage battery and control systems, specialist certification (LVVTA) is not required, provided the high voltage battery pack is replaced by an OEM or aftermarket replacement; and
there is no change in the operating voltage; and
no modifications to the vehicles structure have occurred; and
the replacement battery pack is attached to the vehicle's unmodified, original battery attachment points; and
the replacement battery pack is similar in size, construction, and weight; and
no modifications have occurred to any other part of the vehicle's high voltage system; and
the vehicle retains any safety features (eg isolation/maintenance switch/connector) fitted by the OEM manufacturer; and
the modifications have been carried out by persons professionally engaged in the modification of electric vehicles.
Note: For clarity, ‘similar weight’ is within 30kg of the original battery pack weight.
Maybe this will help someone avoid expensive wof issues in the future.

For those looking at VIVNE packs out of Hubei that means the 40kwh and 50kwh offerings can go straight in, but not the 62kwh which is significantly heavier and requires significant lowering of the pack because the upper lid of the casing requires a raise to fit the new cells. It is a mark of how much the tech has improved over the 15 years since the original Nissan cells were designed that you can fit twice the capacity into a casing for approximately the same weight (the 50kwh is 20kg heavier I think), and a slightly smaller physical package. We have a 50kwh in our ENV200 for the last 18 months and it's a game changer.

I have two Leafs, a 2014 24kw and a 2015 30kw (with all the common battery problems!) and they both have a similar range of about 100km. I use them interchangeably, depending on where I'm going and what the charge is at the time. It's a 100km round trip to town so I top up at the same Chargenet charger when I'm leaving town to head home, so that I don't have to drive at 30kmh all the way back. I do this once or twice a week. But I've noticed that the 2014 24kw car costs approximately twice as much to charge up ($7+) as the 2015 30kw ($3-4) for roughly the same amount of range (approximately from 40% to 80%). Can anyone explain why this is? I'm mystified!

If you're using a public charger you should get an invoice that shows how much energy you got and how the charge is calculated. This is the first step to determine if this is to do with battery capacity, charge rate or cost structure. If the cars have different charge rates then this could affect the cost due to time difference but the two chargers might also have different efficiencies.

If you run the battery down to around 20% and then monitor LeafSpy whilst accelerating with you foot down hard, this will show you the true state of the cells. The mV number really needs to show less than 100mV to stand a chance. Good luck 👍

My 30kw leaf has 7 bars but has done 109k
Great for small trips like Tawa to Porirua or Johnsonville and back. But you need a leafspy report to see the HX % as mine is 29% which makes it no good for Wellingtons big hills. Otherwise it's still a nice car.

Angie it hasn’t been months at sea. It’s been a couple of weeks inside a RORO. 😁 Most likely you have white staining from the heat treatment on rubbers etc. pretty common. For the RUBBERS I’ve found that thinners on a rag is the most effective way of cleaning them up.

Nothing concerning for the most part with those numbers, but if you really want to know if its actually good, the only way is a stress test at a low soc, looking at the numbers I would be surprised if it wasn't good tho

1285 charges over 116,895 kms is 91 kms between charges on average..so the battery probably hasn't got too hot. A nice high Hx is the sign of a healthy battery too. To be more sure another LS report at a low SOC to re-check the mV variation is advised.…

How important is HX in Leaf's 2? I thought it was still important but I've read posts from ~2020 where people say it's no longer relevant as it's reported differently by the BMS, suggesting only to look at SOH.

I have been watching the 40kwh leafs for a long while now, and I am seeing a pattern emerging with cells that don't hold up under load at a low soc it seems to be more likely to happen once the HX % gets into the 60s and below,that doesn't mean to say that one in the 60% Hx is about to fail or is failing, it just seems to be a pattern, much like the 30kwh batteries when their HX % is 40 and below

From what I have seen of the near dead 30kWh Leafs I've limped back to the workshop for upgrades - the lower the HX the worse the lowest cell is. I would say HX is a direct measure of how bad the worst cell is. And if it's under 30, the car can only go about 40km from a full charge heading out if town.

My 2013 leaf is making a loud fan noise from under the bonnet on the passenger side. It's turned off, in the driveway. It's been really cold today, started at -2.
Is this something to worry about?

It's a box marked U2 under the bonnet on the passenger side.
The only way to stop it is to disconnect the 12v battery.

Why is the Nissan Leaf's microphone not working for phone calls?

Hi there,

We have a Nissan Leaf 2017 and have just realised the phone part of the Leaf is not working. When we take calls from any phone the microphone doesn’t seem to pick up anything.
Any tips?

Anthony Appleton-Tattersall usual thing with leaf, battery dies ( it's a 24 not a 30) it has 149k on the clock but i sold my 2008 mazda 2 runabout that had done 340k and still was great then bought a leaf 🤦‍♂️
It's crazy a car that is still in great condition but its 'fuel tank' has shrunk that much its almost useless and to fit a new 'fuel tank' costs more than a car 🙄

Thanks simon from evcs for the 52kwh battery upgrade. Made it home using only 14% i would normally have to stop half way to fully charge and then only just make it home. Super quick. 1.5 hours from start to finish. Can't recommend these guys enough. Super helpful.
