HP Scanjet II series flatbed scanner (hardware peripheral)

Application and Problem:

The HP Scanjet line of scanners are flatbed scanning peripherals used to transfer documents and/or pictures to electronic files or images. They are SCSI connected devices and require a SCSI controller card in the host computer.

The HP Scanjet (IIc was tested) drivers and software will not operate in Windows NT 4.0 as installation is normally performed. Windows NT will not allow the software or drivers to directly access the hardware device.

Solution / Workaround:

The following process is from HP on how to allow the Scanner to be used in Windows NT 4.0

Pre-installation: An Adaptec 1542 card is installed in the computer on one of the following interrupts: 3, 4, 5, 7, or 9. Ensure the card is working properly in NT 4.0 and that there are no conflicts with this device on the system.

1) Copy the files needed to a directory on the local system that has the scanner attached. The files should go into a local directory called c:\disk1\*.*.The files can be copied from Central at \\central\installs\scanjet\*.*.
2) Start the HP Scanjet Setup program by running c:\disk1\setup2.exe
3) At the window titled 'Installation Settings' select the Modify button.
4) At the next window, select A non-HP SCSI card and then click on Continue.
5) Select OK on the 'Verify Settings' window.
6) Setup will install necessary files
7) Do not restart the system yet.
8) Copy the file c:\disk1\hpscan16.sys into the directory c:\winnt\system32\drivers
9) Copy the file c:\disk1\hpscan32.dll into the directory c:\winnt\system32
10) Use notepad to open the file c:\winnt\system32\config.nt
11) Insert the following text: %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\HPSCAN16.SYS
12) Save and Exit notepad
13) Run REGEDT32.EXE
14) Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window
15) Double-click on SYSTEM
16) Double-click on CurrentControlSet
17) Double-click on Services
18) Double-click on Scsiscan
19) Single-click on Start:REG_DWORD
20) Select DWORD from the Edit menu
21) Specify 0 in the Data field and click OK
22) Close REGEDT32
23) Shutdown and Restart Windows NT
