The HP ScanJet IIc is a color scanner for the Macintosh, donated by Hewlett Packard Company. It is located in the School Macintosh Cluster in Mitchell A65. Think good things about HP when using it. It can scan at resolutions up to 400 dots per inch, as monochrome, gray-scale, or color images. Color images can include a full 24 bits of color information per pixel, providing millions of colors. Be sure to open the Monitors Control Panel and select the "millions of colors" option if you want to see 24 bit images on the screen.
The ScanJet IIc is connected to the ESMAC7 computer by a SCSI cable. Only ESMAC7 can be used to scan images; image scanning uses have priority on that Macintosh. Earth Sciences people have priority over those from outside the School.
If you scratch the glass on the scanner, a furious mob of enraged geologists wielding field hammers will descend upon you. DON'T SCRATCH THE GLASS. DON'T PUT ANYTHING EXCEPT PAPER ON THE GLASS (no paper clips, staples, etc.).
Power on the ScanJet first, and then the Macintosh. It may not work correctly in the other order. The scanner power switch is on the right side near the back corner. A green LED in the lower right front glows when the scanner is on.
The DeskScan II and DeskPaint applications are used to make and edit scans. Find them on the local SYSTEM disk in the DeskScan II subfolder of the Local Applications folder. You may need to allocate more memory to these applications if you have large scans. See the general information sheet for the ESMAC computers to learn how to do that.
An interactive "movie" can be run to demonstrate the use of the ScanJet. Double-click on the Getting Started Movie icon in the DeskScan II folder.
DeskScan II controls the scanner hardware and creates the scan files. It has options to control resolution, color depth, scaling, area selection, contrast, exposure, etc. The primary documentation for this program is found by accessing the Help menu. The menu bar within this program's window duplicates the items in the standard Apple menu bar at the top of the screen.
DeskPaint is a 24 bit color paint program. It can be used to edit scanned images that have been saved as disk files or convert them to other formats. Note that it can also be used to edit color bitmap files created in other ways, not just scanned images. To get help on specific tools or menu items, click on the question mark icon in the lower left of the window and follow the directions.
The ScanJet IIc User's Manual, which contains many example illustrations showing various effects that you can achieve, is stored in the cluster by the scanner. Don't take it or lose it!
The TypeReader optical character recognition program can be used to scan pages of text and convert them to ASCII text suitable for word processing programs (rather than just images of the text). It claims to preserve all formatting, including tables. If run on ESMAC7, it can control the scanner directly. It can also be run on the other Macintosh computers to interpret previously saved scan files. This program uses 4Mb of RAM and takes a while to load -- be patient. It is found in the Word Processing folder of the ESMAC_Applications volume on the pangea Aufs network server. The manual for this program is located in the cluster. Don't take it or lose it!
