Compaq T1010 Windows-based Terminal

The Compaq T1010 Windows-based terminal simplifies network administration and lower ownership costs.

Introduction

Compaq T1010 product is a Windows-based Terminal and popularly referred to as a "thin-client." A Windows-based Terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a network to a Windows NT Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix MetaFrame software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. The thin client is but one part of that overall solution.
A Compaq Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. Compaq thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure.
Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department.
While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators) in environments that would be ideal for the Compaq T1010 Windows-based terminal.

Key Facts/Features/Benefits
Simplifying IT management for the enterprise IT managers must face an increasingly complex world. Thin Client Server Computing actually helps simplify IT administration for the enterprise. Utilizing thin clients instead of PCs allows the IT manager to simplify their entire infrastructure. Simplified computing means lower ownership costs and increased resource efficiency of each end-user. It also means an IT manager can manage all their clients remotely, manage a small group of servers rather than thousands of PCs across hundreds of miles. Finally, simplification allows rapid device deployment in a fraction of the time, because the average thin client is set up and running in well under 10 minutes.

An efficient alternative for client computing Companies are facing escalating administration costs for their network environments. Daily tasks like password administration, upgrading software, inoculating viruses, or simply setting up new systems take up an inordinate amount of time of already overburdened network administrators. IT managers are struggling to make their budgets, meet their cost requirements and provide quality service to their constituents. Many of them have reached the same conclusion – that the PC is a powerful and flexible tool, but this flexibility is attached to a corresponding cost. IT managers realize that many of their workers who perform repetitious and relatively standard tasks require a computing device, but do not require the power of desktop PC. When a worker needs to access a legacy database for a specification, enter sales or accounting data, or just use basic email and a browser for example, a Windows Based Terminal is an efficient alternative to the PC.

Provides access to legacy systems and Windows NT Servers Companies have invested large sums of money in mainframe systems with text-based terminals that in many instances still function adequately for particular tasks. It would be unwise to not utilize systems that are still productive. However, many new applications are written for graphical environments, which older, text-based terminals cannot access. The Compaq T1010 Windows-based terminal can perform as a terminal emulator, connecting directly to legacy systems, or as a Windows-based terminal for newer, graphical applications, allowing users to access both the old and the new systems.

Reduces the Lifecycle Cost of Ownership

Lowers Ownership Costs: The initial cost of the Compaq T1010 is lower than that of a standard PC, which provides an immediate benefit. However, there are additional costs that are also reduced when purchasing a Thin-client solution.
Lower Administrative Costs: The Compaq T1010 takes just minutes to set up, not the hour or more setup time a standard PC takes to configure. Plus, software changes, maintenance, and upgrades are done on a central server, not on individual client PCs.
Reduced Technical Support Costs: The design of the T1010 reduces the cost of maintaining these systems. For example:

  • The Compaq T1010 has no moving parts; not even a fan. This results in fewer maintenance events and less down time.
  • With no hard drives, no floppy drive, and limited expandability, Compaq T1010 end users can not introduce new software or hardware into the system. This results in fewer hardware and software conflicts and configuration issues, as well as dramatically reducing the threat of viruses or data theft.
  • If a problem does arise, problem diagnosis is significantly simpler on a Windows-based terminal, compared to a standard PC, where the variables are greater.

No Client Upgrades: Each year, there are dramatic PC improvements, be it processor speeds, hard drive sizes, or bus speeds. Since the Compaq T1010 Windows-based terminal is only displaying applications and data, and not processing or storing data, there is no need to upgrade the client.
Reduced Theft: Unlike traditional PCs, the Compaq T1010 cannot operate unless they are attached to a host server. Since the units cannot be used in a typical home environment, there is little temptation to steal these units.

The Compaq Advantage Compaq One-Stop-Shopping
Those customers who currently have Digital or Tandem file servers, or those looking to upgrade or migrate to Compaq file servers will appreciate the complete Thin Client Server Computing solution that Compaq has to offer. Compaq also provides best in class monitors and a services team that can help design and install a Thin Client Server Computing solution on a large scale across multiple locations. The advantages of one-stop shopping and outstanding services and support provide a single source of accountability and define Compaq as the best source for enterprise computing needs.

Supported Software

The following server operating systems are supported on the standard T1010:

  • Microsoft® Windows® NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Addition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Citrix WinFrame - The only end-to-end thin-client/server software that provides access to virtually any Windows application, across any type of network connection to any type of client
  • Citrix MetaFrame - Thin-client/server solution, built for Microsoft NT4 Terminal Server, that provides a high-performance, cost-effective, secure way to deploy, manage and access business-critical applications enterprise-wide

Compaq has also included RDP and ICA protocols, so that local devices, such as printers, can be configured, and DHCP to make TCP/IP Addressing easier.

The T1010 with NTe O/S supports IE 5.5 and 128-bit encryption

System Features
  • Powered by both Windows NT embedded and CE for Windows-based terminals operating system supports RDP and ICA protocols

Choosing a Server
The sizing of the server is highly dependent on the computing requirements of the end-users. As a general rule of thumb, a 2-way server should support every 50 thin clients, a 4-way would support 100 clients, and so on. Heavier use would require more memory, storage, and processing power. Active Answers – which can be found on Compaq.com – provides a useful server-sizing tool that lets any user estimate their server requirements based on their requirements.

Choosing a Monitor
Compaq recognizes that different users require different types of monitors. That is why Compaq, the number one seller of monitors, offers a broad family of displays for every user type. The Compaq T1010 comes with a standard VESA connection so that the users can select the display that best suits their particular needs.
