Dell PowerEdge 2900 III - CPU Upgrade Xeon x5492 3.4 Ghz

This question has been answered by theflash1932

Hoping someone can confirm if a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III supports an Intel Xeon x5492 3.4Ghz.  Latest Bios 2.7 shows support for 5400 series.  Any information is appreciated.

  • It may or may not work, but it PROBABLY won't.  With the latest BIOS, 5400-family CPU's are supported, BUT the specs outline which are officially supported by the BIOS code:

    Up to 3.16GHz (X5492 runs at 3.4GHz)
    1033 or 1333 MHz FSB (X5492 is 1600MHz)
    2x6MB (12MB) cache (X5492 meets this requirement)

The X5492 exceeds the supported specs (except for cache) and any of them may keep the system from working with it.  However, there is a chance that it will work too.  If you try it, be sure to tell us whether it worked or not, so as to expand our collective knowledge of what the current specs are.

  • Thanks for the information.  Unfortunately you confirmed my findings.  I purchased two of them and when I start the server it starts up and there are no codes on the LCD, however it never posts so nothing ever shows on the screen.  I am new to working with servers but nothing I try gets it to post.  I spoke with Dell and they provided a list of specific supported CPU's for 2900.  I just wish I had this information earlier.

  • Hello, I am looking for the fastest and most efficient CPU upgrade for the Poweredge 2900 Gen III that I manage. I was talking with A Dell Enterprise specialist and he recommended the X5365 Processor which isn't even on this list. I was planning on going with the E5450. I like the low TDP of 80 and the fact it is of 45nm technology. I also compaired the two processors on CPUboss. The one I chose is better all the way around.

Why did he tell me that the X5365 is the fastest upgrade when its not even on this list. Maybe he is making a mistake or This list isn't for the (Gen III) version?

  • I chatted with Dell support and they assured me that those CPU's were supported. I purchased 2 3.0GHz  Intel Xeon CPU's to replace the one dual core that we had with this system since we purchased it. We upgraded the BIOS to 2.70 then installed the CPU's. The system POST's just fine until the VERY END when we get this error: "Unsupported CPU combination." "System Halted"

Then it just stops. The CPU's are a matched pair. Now it's a dead box unless we go back to the single dual core CPU.

  • What processor did you install?  What generation is your 2950?
