About Canon 50mm F/1.8

CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens

What does it take to elevate a standard lens to an extraordinary lens? It takes a lens capable of doing a little bit of everything—a renaissance lens, if you will. Meet the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II, a renaissance lens for the modern photographer, capable of meeting a range of demands, including:

Product Highlights

  • Low-light scenarios. They’re difficult for many standard lenses to handle, but the excellent color balance of the Canon 50mm ensures accurate low-light photographs time and time again.
  • Lightweight construction means you can easily interchange this standard lens when it’s time to turn to a different tool in your photographer’s toolbox.
  • Consistent output might be the most important factor here, and the diligent construction and simple design of this Canon 50mm lens offers consistent output even in a wide range of photographic demands.

Want standard? Buy any old lens. But if you want a standard lens that truly performs, then it’s time to put some thought into your go-to lens.

Learn about the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens

In the photography industry, the word “standard” gets thrown around a lot. A “standard” lens is a lens that handles just about everything you can throw at it, doing no one particular task with any exceptional quality. But a “standard” lens like the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II may officially be “standard,” but you should expect nothing less than exceptional quality.

But how do you know when a lens like this Canon-50mm is indeed above the “standard,” ordinary lenses you’ll see out there on the market? What elevates its photography game high above the other standard lenses out there, giving you exceptional picture quality at “standard” prices? Let’s look beyond what’s “standard” about this lens and find out where it truly shines:

  • Color balance. We can’t talk about a lens like the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II without mentioning the astounding color balance. As any professional photographer knows, color balance can be one of the most underrated variables in any photo. When there’s something “off” about a photo but you can’t quite put your finger on it, you should ask yourself about the color balance. Luckily this lens performs above and beyond the “standard” by offering color balance that doesn’t oversaturate; instead the colors are lush, accurate, and highly attractive in each and every shot. This makes the Canon 50mm ideal for a number of events, including wedding receptions and even run-of-the-mill studio shoots.
  • Low light is a concern with any lens you acquire, whether or not it’s standard. The Canon 50mm delivers well in low light conditions, as it’s well suited for night photography and dimly lit events such as wedding receptions and night club promotions. Grabbing enough quality light in these poorly-lit conditions often requires a big “above-standard” aperture, but this Canon lens offers a surprising amount of detailing even in conditions that other standard lenses might not handle so well.
  • Both near-to-far focusing distances will work exceptionally well with the Canon 50mm, which is a must-have on any standard, versatile lens. You need to be able to take near and far shots at a moment’s notice, especially when you don’t have the time to switch out for a new lens. That’s why it’s so important that your go-to lens be capable of handling near and far shots with the right focus and the proper accuracy.
  • Consistency is key as well, and if there’s anything the Canon 50mm has, it’s consistency. It starts with clear glass that makes for crystal-clear photographs, not to mention quality construction that ensures each lens element is in the right place. Consistency in photographs is easy to attain when you’re dealing with a multitude of lenses, but when you stick to one standard lens, you need to know that every shot will come out looking right.
  • Little details about a standard lens add up to a lot the more you use them: durability, interchangeability, easy mounting, fast autofocus, low-light conditions, how light it is, etc. That’s where the Canon 50mm truly shines, offering exactly what you need out of your standard lens at every corner.

If you want a standard lens that’s hard working and capable of working in just about any environment, there are a lot of quality lenses out there that will do the job. But if you want consistency and excellent color balance, only the Canon 50mm will suffice.

Best performance + value lens at [$]

By paying only [$] for this lens and it gives you the ability to shoot under a very low light [e.g, indoors, museum, etc. shoot wide open at 1.8 or close it down to 2.2 or even 2.4 with ISO 800-3200] and you're in for a treat! In addition the lens is small enough by not being in anybody's face. What more do you want? Take it for what it is and stop comparing it to an L lens this and an L lens that, poor construction, slow focus, and IQ this + IQ that, etc. When you pay above 1K for an L le...

good starter lens

I shoot primarily fine art and portraiture with a 35mm SLR but recently bought a DSLR (Canon Rebel XTi) out of necessity for some projects. I chose this lens as opposed to the kit lens because I wanted a fast prime lens. The main problem I find is that it lacks the necessary sharpness below about f8, which makes it useless for a number of applications. For anyone just starting out in photography, however, I'd recommend this lens simply because it demonstrates the kind of control over dep...

Nice sharp lens. The only problem I had was with the ProOptic lens that Adorama suggested did not fit.

Best Cameram Store in the World

By

 -  Semi-Pro

Adorama gave me a very fair price for the Olympus equipment I sold to them and I got a great price for my Canon 6D that bought. I have always been blown away by the quality of the used equipment I have bought from Adorama. As I said at first, greatest camera store in the world!

It definitely lives up to it's Nifty Fifty nickname!

By

I purchased this a couple weeks ago and thankfully it arrived in a very short period of time. Since then I've been testing it out and have fallen totally in love with this amazing lens! For my photography business, this lens really comes in handy for portrait and modeling shoots. Great for anytime of the day, including night. The auto focus is fast, quiet and accurate, which is great for when I shoot video. Though it took some getting used to, I do love that it doesn't have zoom capabilities. That allows me to push myself as a photographer and move around much more. The images are crystal clear and the bokeh you get in the background makes for gorgeous images! Overall this was a fantastic investment and is officially my favorite out of all the prime lenses in my collection. I can see why so many love this one! Attached are some pictures taken with the Nifty Fifty. All images were taken on a Canon t3i (which I've been looking to upgrade).

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
Lief C  Great Prime lens for low light
RAYMOND D  best bang for your buck!
MOHAMMED Z  Low light performance. Light on weight and pocket
JENNIE D  I bought this lens primarily for use in doing portrait work. I've seen some photo samples on the Adorama website [from other people that purchased this lens] prior to purchase and the photos looked very nice.
ACCOUNTS P  Best lens for you money period. Build quality is poor but lens is fast and sharp. For just over $100 you can buy another one if it breaks. Would buy again!
GUILLERMO J  great pictures
BRENT K  Excellent lens for the price!
SOHAIL G  No brainer here! For the money you get a super low light lens. Opened up my eyes to what could be achieved without a flash. Great first low light lens.
DEDRA W  I love this lens! It works great for portraits and is super for blurring background.
Anthony S  Cost and very good reviews.
RUSSELL H  I bought this for my own use as a fast low light lens and it works great. A good sharp lens with a very short depth of field at full aperture
KRISHANU K  The most affordable lens in the current canon lens line up. Good starting point fro DSLR photography.
RYAN C  My previous copy of this lens broke (they're quite fragile), but it's still the best glass in Canon's lineup, dollar-for-dollar. I absolutely love this lens!
STEVE S  My go to lens most of the time. Can't beat the quality of pictures for the money. Absolutely love this lens.
ERICK S  Inexpensive and sharp lens. I bought this just to have a quick auto focus lens option. My other lenses are all manual so this helps out in the times I need auto focus.
PATRICK L  Super sharp, and despite what others say, the bokeh is in the league of the 100mm Canon macro lenses.
MIKE F  The best lens ever made for the $$ - don't wait... buy this !
ANGEL R  had to try for price and was truly suprised at the quailty pictures it took.
Edison J  Good reviews and also useful for portraits shots.
REINDER D  It's cheap, light and it is fabulous! So simple it can't go wrong; proven to perfection. This is my reference lens in any situation. High quality photos that I cannot get with consumer end zooms, only with high end zooms that are many, many times the price of this baby. Wanna learn real photography? Start with this one before spending money on other lenses.
SHERRI G  Reccomended by a friend who is a professional photographer. This lens is just about the only one I use now and the price is right. Great for close-ups and portraits and shooting with little light
Ioana I  Would this work for very detailed pictures such as a picture of eye makeup? Would it show the colors and textures?I have a cannon T3 rebel.
KARI N  Good Morning. To start off, I have a Rebel T5, and NEVER use any other lens :) That being said, I took a couple pictures this morning to see if they would help you. I cannot seem to attach anything to this answer so I will do my best to describe what I found...When taking a picture of my face, I had to be almost arms length away in order to focus. when using the 1.8 f stop, I could pick up makeup detail on one eye only. When taking pictures of the eye makeup in its container, I used the 1.8 f stop again and was able to get some detail when close up (able to see which of the 3 color I use on a new palette). I hope this helps.
Damian A  Will this work on a canon 6d? Also will you get more of an image than a 40mm?
JOHN W  It will work on a 6D. The image will be 20% larger than a 40 mm.
MARK R  Yes,and yes very good lens for the money
ACHILLES D  Hello. It will work on 6d but if you're looking for wider more image then go for the 40mm.
Andrew R  Should work fine on nearly any Canon EOS system DSLR, including the 6D. I'm not sure what you mean by "more" of an image though. Angle of view for a 50mm lens on full frame digital is roughly equivalent to the field of view for your bare eyes.
