About Nikon 40mm F/2.8

Compact and lightweight DX-format close-up lens
Small enough to be carried everywhere, this standard focal length DX-format Micro-NIKKOR lens provides high resolution and contrast from infinity to life-size (1x). The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is for taking high quality stills and HD D-Movies and is ideal for shooting general close-ups, delicate flowers, detailed collectables, copy photography, portraits, landscapes and more.

Reveal Hidden Beauty
Sharp images from infinity to life-size (1x)
This standard close-up lens captures the finest details at any distance, including details practically impossible to detect with the human eye (at 1x magnification). It's a great choice for enticing food photography or detailed product shots. And with its continuous autofocusing from infinity to 6.4 inches (life-size/1x), the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G ensures sharpness and clarity in every composition.

Carry It With You Everywhere
Stunning portraits and landscapes, too!
The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is compact, lightweight and versatile enough for everyday photography, including flattering people shots and breathtaking landscapes, so you get brilliant results in most situations without switching lenses.

Isolate Your Subjects
Natural Background Blur (Bokeh)
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature indoors or outdoors the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G's rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. Selective focus helps to isolate the subject, creating out of focus backgrounds.

Superior Close Range Focusing
The Close-Range Correction system is one of Nikon's most important focusing innovations. Using an innovative floating element design, each lens group moves independently to achieve superior performance at close distances.

Quiet Autofocus
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations rather than a gear system to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.

Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced lens flare

Fantastic Lens

I sold my Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 to get this lens (primarily for the macro ability), and I haven't regretted it one bit! The quality of the photos in the normal range are just as good as the ones I got on my beloved 35mm. Plus, the macro ability is just incredible. All pictures are extremely sharp with no chromatic aberration, and it is extremely versatile.

Great option if you are on a budget

I've been using this lens for a few months off and on with a D5300. The only thing that isn't great about this lens is the auto focus. It constantly rotates the dial back and forth, and I've waited minutes for it to either take the image, or I just turn the camera off. So I pretty much only shoot in manual. I did notice this problem would get worse the more you zoomed in you get. Despite the auto focus, I'm happy. I was looking for an inexpensive macro lens for product photography, and I found this one does the job.

Great macro

I wanted a 1:1 macro and I am very happy with this lens. You do need to be very close to your subject, but many insects don't mind. For flowers with drops of water and small insects like ants and ladybugs it is excellent. The lens is sharp and at F2.8 a 4000 of a second is possible. I used a tripod for the pictures here.

good bang for the buck

Basically, enjoying using it. Learning how to get those close ups. I like the manual focus ring, that helps when the subject is immersed. Anyway, good bang for the buck.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
RICHARD J  This lens is just as sharp as the more expensive 60, 85 and 105 mm Nikon macro lenses. It is also highly versatile and makes a great walk-around lens.
DAVID B  very lightweight and a good value
GEORGE S  For the DX format, it's a very sharp and fast "walking around" lens, and a nice macro as well, equivalent to a 60 mm on an FX camera, which is a good portrait size too; and look at that price.
RICHARD B  I wanted a reasonably fast 60mm macro-equivalent lens.
RANDALL S  Because it is so small and light it makes an inconspicuous "street" lens. Also the macro ability means I can reach for this lens twice as often.
Gary C  Can I use this lens with my d50?
PETER R  I use it on my D90 and D5300 and it works perfectly on both. There should be no problem on your D50
Betty B  Does anyone know if this is compatible with a Nikon D80?
WILLIAM S  I don't know anything about a D80. I've used it on a D90, D7000 and D7200 with good results.
Susan C  I bought this lens for my D80 and used it quite often. This morning I shot Macros of cactus flowers on my D7000 with this lens. Nice lens, good price.
